Tenby was not always a busy tourist destination; due to its fairly isolated coastal location, it was not frequented by tourists until the Victorian era. Access to the town improved, but Tenby managed to retain some of that old-world charm which makes it such a wonderfully relaxing destination. For instance, cobbled streets and medieval town walls characterise some of the town centre, and these streets are off limits to cars in the summer months, adding to the picturesque appearance and calming atmosphere associated with Pembrokeshire cottage holidays.
When staying in Tenby cottages there is a lot to do right on your doorstep. One day you could be strolling along the cobbled streets, sampling local food in one of Tenby’s cafes, the next you could spend a day swimming at the beach and stop in a local pub for a drink in the evening. These are just a few things that you can get up to in Tenby and it just shows that there is plenty to do in the immediate area.
For activities that involve going a bit further afield you can start by going down to Tenby harbour for one of the many boat trips available. There are boat trips to suit everybody, such as the island cruise which takes you around the bird reserve on St Margaret’s Island to Caldey Island, where seals are often spotted around the cliffs. Also on offer are evening cruises which show how beautiful Tenby harbour looks in the evening, a real treat to behold from an interesting perspective.
Carew Castle and Tidal Mill is another favourite attraction to visit. Its history spans over 2000 years and the tidal mill has been restored, the only one of its kind in Wales. An 11th century Celtic cross can also be found on the grounds whilst the castle itself is magnificent and most of the stonework remains intact. Throughout the year, various events are held that give visitors insight into Tudor life and the realm of medieval knights. There is a wealth of history to discover at places surrounding Tenby cottages.
There are terrific coastal walks to be had close to Tenby cottages; the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path runs through Tenby and is well signposted. These walks are ideal for photographers as stunning views in all directions are on offer along various points of the path, great for a picturesque photo opportunity. We also offer cottages that are dog-friendly and these coastal walks are ideal for people with dogs. There are restrictions for dogs in the summer months in Tenby but there are plenty of dog-friendly beaches available in the Pembrokeshire area, such as Glen beach.
If you happen to have a rainy day occur on your stay, there are plenty of interesting and fun places to visit, such as Tenby Museum and Art Gallery, which traces the story of Tenby from the 9th century to present day. For the kids, there are treasure trails and quiz sheets that will both inform and entertain them. A day at the zoo is ideal to entertain the whole family; Manor House Wildlife Park is one of Pembrokeshire’s best wildlife attractions and is a conservation-led zoo, meaning visitors can meet all kinds of endangered animals here, including the scimitar-horned Oryx and Bactrian camels. It’s great for children and adults alike, with plenty to see and learn about.
There is plenty to do in and around Tenby cottages with activities to suit all generations and tastes. Another pleasant seaside town that is worth a visit is Saundersfoot so why not take a look at some of our Saundersfoot cottages too?
