Three councils in South West Wales have combined to safeguard the beauty of the Gower Peninsula, ensuring that it keeps its breathtaking views for holidaymakers and locals to enjoy for years to come.

Many had been worried that Gower, home to renowned beauty spots such as Rhossili Bay, could become a quarrying source for the nearby city of Swansea, with the council requiring a minimum 10-year supply of crushed rock to meet national requirements. The rock would be used primarily for road maintenance.

Fortunately, with many regions of the peninsula being designated as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Swansea City Council has since teamed up with Neath Port Talbot and Carmarthenshire councils to form an alliance to meet the requirements so that Swansea needn't pursue quarrying works itself. The three have the combined permissions to create 94 million tonnes of rock – over eight times more than the 10-year requisite. It will come as fantastic news for anyone forward to their Wales cottage holidays this summer, ensuring the picturesque views of Gower Peninsula remain unspoiled.
