Where to find the best sunsets in Pembrokeshire?

With the months ahead offering warm temperatures and long days of sunshine, there’s never been a better time to enjoy a cottage getaway in Pembrokeshire. In the case of beautiful blue skies, the end result is a beautiful sunset and this fine region of South Wales offers some of the best experiences of this daily phenomenon. 

To find out where best to enjoy the perfect sunset in Pembrokeshire, we got in touch with a host of local businesses to find out their opinions. We hope our guide will offer the perfect inspiration for you to really make the most of your holiday in the region.

We start with a photographer, because what better person to obtain advice on sunsets than someone who takes picture-postcard images for a living? The man we got in touch with is Gareth Davies, a professional photographer from Tenby who has more than 25 years’ experience in getting the perfect shots. Because it was hard to choose just the one, Gareth decided to give us his top three instead.

“My favourite places for really intense sunsets are: Freshwater West, Whitesands Bay and Carew Castle.”

How to get there from Tenby?

Freshwater West: Around a half hours’ drive East, head out on the B4318 before travelling on the A477 and the A4075. After turning on to the B4320 it’s on the left-hand side and will be clearly signposted.

Whitesands Bay: Up on the North western coast of Pembrokeshire, Whitesands is around an hour away from Tenby but the views offered make the effort all worthwhile. You need to follow all signs for Haverfordwest and then take the A487 until you reach St David’s. Continue north for around one mile and it will be well signposted.

Carew Castle: Just over six miles away, head towards the A477 and turn off at the roundabout in Carew Cheriton onto the A4075. 

Outer Reef Surf School

Spending all day out in the sunshine on the sands of Pembrokeshire, the staff at Outer Reef Surf School ought to know the best places to catch the last moments of the day’s sun. When we asked them they didn’t disappoint, mentioning Freshwater West as well as two more fantastic locations to check out during your family cottage holiday in Tenby. 

“The best places to watch the sunset are Freshwater West near CastleMartin, Pembroke (Marloes beach and The Deer Park Walk, Marloes Peninsula, and Skomer Island are two other beautiful spots to catch the sunset.” 

How to get there from Tenby?

The Deer Park Walk, Marloes Peninsula: One of the most westerly points of Wales, the easiest method of getting to the walk is to head to Pembroke Dock and follow signposts for Marloes. Drive past Marloes until you reach Lockley Lodge Visitor Centre.

Skomer Island: If you’re already at Marloes Peninsula then you will already be able to see the small outcrop that is Skomer Island. Fortunately there are a host of ferry services available from here over to Skomer. 

Coast Saundersfoot

Despite being a relative newcomer in the range of Pembrokeshire restaurants, Coast Saundersfoot has quickly developed a reputation as one of the finest places to enjoy a bite to eat and thanks to the esteemed skills of Will Holland at the helm, the menu on offer looks to please all types of diners. With their perfect location overlooking the beautiful Coppet Hall beach, they understandably feel that their restaurant is the perfect place to head for the best shot of the sunset.

“The best place to watch the sunset would have to be from the terrace of our restaurant. The terrace overlooks Coppet Hall beach, which makes it the ideal location for a little al fresco dining while the sun goes down.” 

How do I get there from Tenby?

Luckily Saundersfoot is located very close to Tenby, and as such the community is very well signposted. To reach the restaurant, get to The Strand in Saundersfoot and continue to the end of the road – it’s unmissable from there.

As being out to sea gives the opportunity to see for miles around, it’s hardly surprising that it’s one of the best ways of seeing the sunset at its best.  As we would never recommend making your own way out to sea, the easiest and most enjoyable way to experience a trip away from dry land is by booking a trip with Broadside Boat Charters, a company based in Dale which offers sea angling, diving and wildlife trips throughout the year. How do I get there from Tenby?

In order to enjoy these fantastic trips you will have to get to drive to Dale on Pembrokeshire’s west coast. The easiest way to get there is to stay on the A477, travelling onto Station Road and heading towards Marloes. You then need to take the B4327 and follow the road until you reach Dale.
