Those that attended or took part in Saundersfoot’s New Year’s Day Swim, sponsored by Powells, may recognise one of the X Factor’s 12 remaining contestants! Jay James, who is currently being mentored by Simon Cowell, took part in this year’s New Year’s Day swim, and also led the singing of Happy Birthday to swim mascot Charlie Shivers in celebration of the event’s 30th birthday.

The singer-song writer from Saundersfoot appeared in his first live performance at the weekend, and sang a rendition of Paloma’s Faith’s ‘Changing’. Impressing Simon Cowell, the judge likened him to a ‘British Adam Levine’, the lead singer from popular chart-topping band Maroon 5. Coming from Saundersfoot himself, where we manage our collection of quality Pembrokeshire cottages, it is hoped that Jay James will return again for this year’s swim (if he’s not too busy promoting his debut Christmas single!).

Supporting the local community

Taking part alongside Jay James in the Saundersfoot New Year’s Day Swim was Christian from Powells, who was also a guest at the 2014 presentation evening. It was here that it was announced a grand total of £37,505 had been raised for more than 50 charities by all the brave swimmers who took the plunge.

The Saundersfoot New Year’s Day Swim usually sees more than one thousand swimmers in fancy dress take to the freezing cold sea water. Each year a specially designed rugby shirt is produced to commemorate the event, and Jay James himself has been seen wearing the 2014 shirt alongside swim mascot Charlie Shivers – like in the above photo!

The singer will be appearing in the next instalment of the live competition this Saturday and will be rooted for by all the team at Powells. Also, carrying on the tradition, Nicola from Powells will be taking part in the 2015 New Year’s Day swim to continue the support for this fantastic event and its chosen charities.
