The first NYD swim started off in 1984 when the Flying Pickets held the Christmas number one spot in the charts, with ‘Only You’! Intially organised on the Boxing day, but later changed the year after, to New Year’s Day.  It all began with the idea to raise money for the new sports club changing rooms and much needed equipment for the local medical centre in Saundersfoot.  At the start there were just a few hardy locals who ran into the cold sea waters.  Now after 30 years, this event is firmly placed on the top 10 Sea dips in the UK, with over 1,500 swimmers and with thousands more watching. A huge fundraising event with local and national charities benefiting.

Swimmers come in all manner of fancy dress from far and wide and there is an energetic warm up just before the swimmers take the plunge. The spectators in their droves line the promenade overlooking the beach and up along the St Brides Hill for a bird’s eye view. Fireworks signal the start of this fun filled occasion as a sea of people make the mad dash into the freezing waters returning up the beach with their teeth chattering.

We are extremely proud to add that Powells Cottage Holidays are the main sponsors of this event. There is a rugby shirt designed each year to mark the occasion, this has just been unveiled and of course, Charlie Chivers who is the swim mascot will be in attendance.  So, please do come along and if you’re not taking part then come to cheer on all the brave swimmers.

We have a fantastic selection of properties available from sleep 2 and upwards, so take a look and we hope to welcome you to Saundersfoot for this great event. The swim starts at 12.30 on the main beach in Saundersfoot, so come and celebrate your New Year with us!
